Who should not take amoxicillin?
People who are allergic to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics.
Capsules, envelopes and suspensions of amoxicillin should not be used if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously had an allergy. If you feel you have had an allergic reaction, stop taking amoxicillin and tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
Amoxicillin should be used with caution in case of:
- kidney problems
- people with a history of allergies
- people with suspected glandular fever, acute or chronic lymphoid leukemia, or cytomegalovirus (CMV) such as the antibiotic commonly cause a rash in people with these conditions.
How often should I take amoxicillin and what is the dose of it?
The dose of amoxicillin should be prescribed and how long it should be taken depends on the type and severity of the infection you have, your weight, age and kidney function. Follow the instructions given by your doctor.
Usually amoxicillin is taken three times a day, but you should always follow the instructions given by your doctor.
Try to dose them evenly during your waking hours. For example, adults who have been given a dose three times a day may take one dose at 7am, one at 3pm and another at 11pm. However, the children were given a dose three times a day and could be given the medication at 7am, 1pm and 7pm. You can ask your pharmacist for more advice.
Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, it is important that you finish the prescribed course of amoxicillin, even if you feel better or it seems that the infection has cleared up. Stopping the course early increases the likelihood of the infection returning and the bacteria growing resistant to the antibiotic.
How should I take it?
Amoxicillin may be given in the form of capsules, powdered envelopes or liquid suspension. Amoxicillin capsules should be swallowed with a drink.
The contents of the envelopes of amoxicillin should be mixed in half a glass of water just before taking.
Suspension bottles of amoxicillin should be shaken before measuring a dose. Use only the measuring spoon or oral syringe supplied with the suspension. Do not use a teaspoon or spoonful to give the medicine, as this will not give an exact dose.
Should I take amoxicillin with or without food?
Amoxicillin can be taken with or without food, on a full or empty stomach.
What should I do if I miss a dose of amoxicillin?
If you forget to take a dose of amoxicillin at the right time, take it as soon as you remember and then wait for the rest of your dose for the remainder of the day. Always try to take the correct number of doses each day, leaving at least four hours between doses. Do not take two doses together to make up the missed dose.
